Alberta Whitetail Deer Hunting

For years, we in Alberta have been saying we have the biggest white-tail deer in the world.  In order to successfully hunt large white tail deer, three conditions must be met:

GO to an area where large deer range.
GO when the deer make themselves most available.
GO with someone to put you in the situation for the best chance of success.

Whitetail Deer Hunting Alberta, CanadaA guide’s job is to put the hunter in a situation where he has the opportunity to shoot an animal.  What I can’t understand is a hunter who comes up here and kills a buck of his own free will in the first few days and after the deer is dead gets upset because his buck is smaller than he wanted.  You will have many opportunities to shoot a deer, but we can’t say a bigger deer will come by.

I tell all my hunters at the start of the hunt that if there is something that they are having a problem with to let me know as soon as possible so it can be resolved.  Notifying us about a problem after the hunt does not solve the issue.

We were prepared for the 2006 November Whitetail hunting season as all my hunting blinds have been built for comfort in the cold.  Not only was it the coldest year in some time, it was the most successful.  The deer were moving everywhere in order to eat more to keep their body temperature up.  Out of 42 hunters, only four went home without killing a buck, but all had the opportunity at something 140 or bigger.

The record book will indicate that the majority of Alberta trophy deer are taken after the middle of November, so I highly recommend that you hunt after this time.  Cold makes the herd feed and the rut is usually after November 15th.  I have allocation in four very good zones that make it possible for me to offer two hunts of six days each in a good place in prime time.

Hunt Area

Whitetail Deer hunt alberta canadaWe use four (4) distinct areas in the Province of Alberta. Zone 506, Zone 505, Zone 339, and Zone328.  Two are privately owned farm land, where we utilize local guides, who in some cases are landowners themselves.  This means the guides are very familiar the habit of the deer and good relations within the community makes it easier to get access to their neighbor’s land. In many instances, we have sole access to hundreds of acres of prime hunting terrain. The other is Government owned land in extremely remote areas, where oil companies searching for petroleum created a network of roads and clearings. The clearings have become oasis’s from seeded to grasses and clover.  The remoteness of these areas result in little hunting, thereby producing some of the biggest bucks in Alberta.  To offer optimum opportunity, each guide takes two (2) hunters per week.  We already know big deer are in the areas before guides are assigned a client.

Mule deer are present in Zone 328 and 339, so if the hunter gets his white-tail deer early, he could get a second deer on the same hunt.  The only cost would be a license fee of $1,000.00, available from the outfitter prior to or during the hunt. (Provided Mule deer allocation is available.)
